St. Charles School at 8125 Swan Creek Road, Newport, MI 48166 US - Our School's History

Our School's History

Saint Charles School officially opened its doors to welcome our first student body on February 10, 1913.  WIthin the next few years it had acquired a student body of 150 students and 5 teaching sister from the Immaculate Heart of Mary Community from  Monroe, Michigan.  The school continued to grow, adding onto the elementary grades, the first two high school years.

Tragedy struck on January 9, 1923, when a fire totally destroyed the school structure.  Immediate steps were taken to erect a larger, more modern school.  With the support of Saint Charles Parish and the assistance of sympathetic friends, a new school was built.

In 1944, the high school was discontinued due to the opening of a boys school, Catholic Central, in Monroe, Michigan and the over-crowding in the elementary school.  Enrollment now had grown to 300.

April 3, 1966, was a red-letter day in the lives of Saint Charles parishioners as ground was again broken for a new school.  In February of 1967, the student in grades 1-4 moved into the new school building, alleviating the crowdedness in the older structure.

In September of 1990, a New Hall/Gymnasium was added, with a full kitchen, and an upstairs level that houses a beautiful library and computer lab.   In the Fall of 2006, the school was fortunate to add a locker rooms for the boys and girls sports program as well as athletic department storage room to the New Hall/Gymnasium.

St. Charles has had a steady enrollment of approximately 200 students and we continue to grow.  We will continue to serve our young people by instilling high moral standards, a love and service to God and respect for all people.
