Community Service

 

Saint Charles Students participate in many community service projects.  Some projects are for all students in the school and others are done by individual grades.  Some of them are:

 

  1. Grades Pre-K through 8 make Christmas cards annually for our parish shut-ins.  They also make Easter cards and send along a gift (flowers). 
  2. Collect money for the Missions.  Student Council sponsors at least one child.  Students from all grades make contributions.
  3. Students cantor at school and parish masses.
  4. Select Choir entertains residents of Alterra Assisted Living.  They also have performed at Relay for Life luncheon and sang at opening ceremonies for Relay for Life in Monroe.
  5. Rice Bowls for Lent (annual event).
  6. Decorate hundreds of Christmas tree ornaments annually for our parish tree to raise funds for Heartbeat of Monroe and Saint Anne’s Food Closet.
  7. Students work at our parish breakfasts and fish fries.
  8. Students plant flowers around the church each year.
  9. Relay for Life – numerous projects by students including such items as making placemats, purchasing and displaying hearts in honor or in memory of a loved one, working at the luncheon, doing laps and working at the actual event.
  10. Each class makes a project for the P.T.G. auction.
  11. Work at Saint Anne’s Food Closet.
  12. Participate in Jump Rope for Heart.
  13. 5th grade – project:  collected hats, gloves, tarps, survival gear for Philadelphia House.
  14. Pre-K/Kindergarten project:  collect baby supplies for Heartbeat of Monroe.
  15. 3rd and 6th grade project:  Decorate Christmas tree together for an Advent project and set it up at Custer Museum.
  16. 3rd grade project:  cards were sent to Case Western Veterans Hospital for Veterans Day and Memorial Day.  Holiday pictures were made and sent at Halloween, Christmas, and Easter to decorate nursing home patients’ room.
  17. Students secured pledges of gloves and hats based on amount of books read.  Sent to Monroe County Battered Women’s Shelter.
  18. 3rd grade project:  students wrote and illustrated stories for students at St. Francis Community School in Itimpi, Zambia. 
  19. 4th grade project:  wrote prayers and sent them to a shelter in San Antonio, Texas for Hurricane Katrina children
  20. 4th grade project:  made pictures for an orphanage in Iraq (St. Charles family sponsors a soldier)
  21. At Parish Festival, students help with set up and tear down.  At event, pick up trash and cans and work at booths.
  22. Girls basketball team members: cleaned up new hall after golf outing
  23. Confirmation requires 15 hours of service, 5 of those hours are community service.
  24. All School project (Fall of 2005)  Students collected donations to victims of Hurricane Katrina
  25. 8th grade project: collected items for military personnel currently serving in Iraq.
